Istanbul has measured time for centuries. Now it makes its own watch.
The atelier
A small atelier, on purpose.
Krespi Istanbul was founded by Eren Krespi. Each Krespi is designed in Istanbul and manufactured with specialist partners. The first watch is the Nasci; the first 300 are numbered.
We set out to make beautiful, well-made watches. No unnecessary display. Beauty in simplicity and in making; quiet quality.
How we work
Few. Well. Serviceable.
A numbered first series
The first 300 Nasci are numbered. It keeps the quantities plain, keeps us close to the people who buy them, and means every piece can be checked properly before it leaves.
Serviceable movements
We use Swiss movements any competent watchmaker can service, because a watch that cannot be repaired in twenty years is not really a watch.
Plain specs
We write down the metal and the movement and let the watch say the rest.
The city
A city built on two shores must decide, constantly, what to keep and what to let go.
Our philosophy is that decision itself. What to keep: patience, honesty, the weight of work done by hand, making a few things well. What to let go: hurry, display, anything that needs explaining.
Time
Muvakkithanes, Topkapı, clock towers.
In Ottoman Istanbul the muvakkithanes, timekeeping houses attached to the mosques, kept the city’s time for centuries. Topkapı Palace holds one of the world’s important clock collections; the city’s clock towers are emblems of the nineteenth century. This city has always measured time. It had simply never made its own watch.
Rhythm
Tea under the bridge, a fishing line above it.
Istanbul’s time is measured in rhythm, not in hours: the ferry leaving, the call to prayer, the fisherman waiting on the bridge, the tea brewing beneath it. None of it hurries; all of it happens exactly on time.
